Treasures: Adventures in Archaeology exhibition

The Welsh Government has billed 2016 as a 'Year of Adventure'. The campaign promotes high-profile initiatives and visitor attractions, the first in place being the Treasures: Adventures in Archaeology exhibition.

Boasting an enviable level of success designing visitor attractions, Cod Steaks’s offering as a design and build company proved invaluable to our client. Our streamlined business allowed the project to be completed on time and ensured the National Museum of Wales’s vision, of an aspirational exhibition, to be realised.

The Treasures: Adventures in Archaeology exhibition draws content from around the world, which led us to visualise the entire exhibition as a series of immersive zones. By recreating iconic elements from key countries, visitors are naturally guided through a feast of historic finds, truths and myths, as well as discovering more about some of the explorers responsible. Three-metre-high replicas of Egyptian hieroglyphic sunk reliefs and Welsh mountain crags were painstakingly recreated and carefully sculpted around priceless artefacts in their display cases, giving a visual impact not often seen within a museum.

From vast wall vistas to enticing tactile surfaces, together the displays offer an exciting sensory experience for visitors to explore. The bilingual information boards are also suitably inviting — designed in a playful manner, completely at home in this exhibition.

The end result is a perfect balance of historically intriguing, mentally engaging and visually arresting. And let’s not forget, it also contains the jacket, hat and whip worn by a certain Indiana Jones…
