Launching May 2021 at BOXPARK Wembley, Pop Golf offers a completely unique social experience for crazy golfers and 21st-century pop music fans, built on the belief that nothing brings people together like music and play. The ultimate playground for pop lovers, the venue features a course of nine pop-themed holes paired with a killer sound system.
Owner Allan Saud and Smith & Devil aimed to thread the pop music theme through every touchpoint in a meaningful and memorable way, with Pop Golf’s music-first ethos bolstered by forward-thinking playlist curation from industry experts showcasing the best new tracks, and exclusive content from up & coming acts. In collaboration with Middlesex Sound, the ‘sound lounge’ bar area provides a high-quality audio experience in-between rounds, and reactive audio technology adds wizardry to gameplay, set to blow minds not ears.
Owner of Pop Golf and Founder of Mighty Adventures, a chain of family adventure golf parks, Allan Saud said of the new venture:
“Our mission with Pop Golf was to create a rich experience that tells a story. This is not just another standard crazy golf course, this is a celebration of music. From the design to the innovative and sustainable drinks menu, to the team behind it and the brands we’re partnering with, pop music has led the way. We want our guests to rock up to Pop Golf, have an awesome time and leave feeling that music has the power to change the world!”
Discussing the concept, Alex Lewis of Smith & Devil said, "We were asked to create something that does crazy golf differently. When a client like Allan has the ambition to give you that creative freedom, it's amazing what you can do. Usually, experience concepts start with big ideas and get pared back, but with concept, design and build working so closely together right from the get-go we were able to deliver our vision as it was intended to be.
“Pop Golf lets you play in iconic music videos. The tone of voice behaves like a pop blog, and the visual identity stems from the landscape of 21st Century pop. The result is a purpose-built for social sharing brand, and an experience that evolves in tandem with the sound, personality and values of today. Not to mention an unforgettable social experience, after all, it only takes one fabulous pop song to bring back a million memories.”
Award-winning Zachary Pulman Design Studio laid out a bold vision for the crazy golf course; to strike the perfect balance between cool aesthetic and challenging playability – while still being a load of fun.
Celebrating the golden age of pop videos, the venue’s design takes inspiration from the most iconic pop promos through the eras. From a luminescent box inspired by Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ video to a retro ’80s Neon Club design complete with boomboxes and suspended cassette tapes, each hole is totally unique, designed to offer the experience of stepping straight into a music video.
Starting at concept level and applying a really strong sense of brand to the experience and design, right through to completion, there was a depth of thought to the process that is reflected in the quality of the end result – a venue that is interesting and a memorable experience, with or without crazy golf.
With its radial design, pop art-inspired colour-blocking not only adds to the immersive quality of each hole, it also makes you feel like you’re moving between dramatically contrasting worlds of pop music. Like you're the star!
To ensure super fun as well as challenging playability, all holes underwent computer simulations before fabrication. The final round of testing was carried out by world golf champions who make sure all skill levels are catered for.
Zachary Pulman of Zachary Pulman Design Studio said “In designing Pop Golf, we aimed to create fully immersive gameplay in a crazy golf venue that feels as if you’re moving between dramatically different pop music worlds. We had a lot of fun dedicating each hole to a sub-genre covering everything from 80s neon boombox nostalgia, to analogic music tech and equalizers, to pop star excess!
“Constant dialogue with the whole team resulted in a truly collaborative process from concept to creation. The process was time-intensive but we think the final result reflects this comprehensive and nurtured approach.
“What’s great about working with Cod Steaks Ltd is they’re very hands on, in dealing with the people actually making it, the venue is beautiful and durable. It’s amazing to see the end result so close to the visuals.
“What our team has done is something very special indeed. We have had to replicate the design whilst adhering to the concept in its fullness and at the same time create a playable golf course! We had to research a huge arsenal of materials, finishes, lighting effects to faithfully replicate this incredible design and I am delighted with the outcome – a huge team effort!”
